AKQA was one of the original digital pioneers, founded in London in 1994 and now part of WPP. Long before "digital agency" was a redundant phrase, it was building interactive work for Nike, Audi and the rest of the blue-chip set, and its self-description as a "design and innovation company" is earned rather than aspirational. The work tends to sit where brand, product and emerging technology overlap, the kind of thing that wins at Cannes and ships as a real experience.

What you get with AKQA is global reach with a genuine craft pedigree, which is a rarer combination than the holding-company brochures suggest. The trade-off is the usual one for a network shop: scale can mean more process between you and the people doing the best work. But on innovation-led briefs, the ones that need a designer and an engineer in the same room, AKQA has been doing this longer and better than most of the competition.
